Gaming

Gaming is a favorite activity for many teenagers. But as a parent, it can be hard to know what’s ‘normal’ and how to talk about it in a positive way.

1. How much gaming is too much? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but a common guideline is 1 to 2 hours per day on school days, and a bit more on weekends. More important than the number of hours is whether gaming gets in the way of other things—like sleep, homework, sports, or social time. If those are going well, there’s usually no need to worry.

2. How can I set limits on gaming without constant arguments?Make agreements together during a calm moment—not in the middle of a conflict. Explain why you set limits, and listen to what your child finds important too. You can write the rules down and hang them up somewhere visible. It’s helpful to use a timer, so you don’t have to keep saying it’s time to stop. And don’t forget to be a good role model with your own screen time.

3. Why is gaming so important to my child? For many teens, gaming is both relaxation and a way to connect with friends. They chat through headsets and play together online. For kids who find social situations difficult, gaming can feel safe and predictable. Try showing interest in what your child is playing—ask questions and join the conversation.

4. What if gaming gets out of control?Sometimes gaming seriously affects school, sleep, or mood. If that happens, it’s a good idea to seek help—through school, your family doctor, or a youth professional. Together, you can explore what’s behind the behavior and how to best support your child.
